Suarez´s absence hurts Uruguay on and off the pitch – Lodeiro

Nicolas Lodeiro conceded Uruguay will lose a lot through Luis Suarez s suspension at the 2015 Copa America.

Uruguay will head to Chile in June as reigning Copa champions but will have to defend their title without talismanic striker Suarez, who remains unavailable for competitive international fixtures, following his bite on Giorgio Chiellini at last year s World Cup.

Suarez is banned from Uruguay s next nine competitive matches, he can serve a maximum of six at the tournament in Chile.

The Barcelona forward has scored 21 goals in all competitions for the Catalan club this season and was Uruguay s top-scorer with four in their 2011 Copa triumph.

He will leave a massive hole in Oscar Tabarez s squad, although Lodeiro has urged Uruguay to get over Suarez s …

Johnson gearing for title run

Glen Johnson said he is eyeing more trophies after claiming the Carling Cup with Liverpool on Sunday.

The right-back, who scored in the penalty-shootout against Cardiff City on Sunday, helped end the Reds six-year trophy drought.

The 27-year-old has set his sights on further success with the club, who have an FA Cup quarter-final against Stoke at Anfield to prepare for.

He told the club s official website: It would mean the world. That’s what football is about – getting to finals and winning these trophies.

That’s what it s all about, that s what we work hard for day in, day out.

The England international joined Liverpool from Portsmouth in 2009 for 18 million pounds, and Johnson admitted that the move was in pursuit of winning more majo…

Manchester United great Giggs keen on Everton, Leicester jobs

Ryan Giggs has declared his interest in the Premier League managerial vacancies at Everton and Leicester City.

Manchester United great Giggs served as assistant to Louis van Gaal during the Dutchman s Old Trafford tenure, leaving when Jose Mourinho took the reins in 2016.

The former Wales international also interviewed for the job at Swansea City last season but has only taken charge of four senior matches when placed in caretaker charge of United after David Moyes’ departure in 2014.

Everton sacked Ronald Koeman on Monday after a 5-2 weekend defeat to Arsenal at Goodison Park left them in the bottom three – a point worse off than Leicester after caretaker boss Michael Appleton oversaw a 2-1 win at Swansea in the wake of Craig Shakespeare s dismissal.

Lopetegui keeping Spain door open for Costa

Spain head coach Julen Lopetegui says there is time for Diego Costa to force his way into World Cup selection contention when he resumes playing in January.

The striker has not played for Chelsea since last season and cannot appear for new club Atletico Madrid until their registration ban is lifted at the beginning of next year.

Costa was unsurprisingly omitted from the Spain squad for this month s friendly matches with Costa Rica and Russia but Lopetegui insists he has not discounted him from his thinking.

Asked about the 29-year-old, the coach told a news conference: We ll see from January, but he s in our plans.

Lopetegui also stressed that David Villa and Dani Parejo could earn a place in the squad in future.

Villa, 35, was recalled for the W…

How Atletico Madrid´s rock solid defence made them look like LaLiga challengers again

It was by no means a vintage LaLiga campaign for Atletico Madrid in 2019-20.

Atletico s lacklustre attack saw them fail to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for LaLiga glory, with their tally of 51 goals the worst of any team to finish in the European places.

Diego Simeone has managed to get more out of his team going forward this season and Atleti sit top of the table with 21 goals scored – the second-best record in the league – from their 10 games.

Not solely content with getting his team to find a more clinical streak, the Argentinian has managed to further tighten things up in a defence that only champions Madrid conceded fewer than last term.

Atleti have shipped just two league goals, matching Deportivo La Coruna s record from 1993-94 for the b…

Vokes, Church return to bolster Wales attack

Sam Vokes and Simon Church have returned from injury to take their place in Wales squad for the forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifier in Israel.

Burnley striker Vokes has not played for his country since a 3-1 friendly victory over Iceland more than a year ago, but returned to domestic action on Boxing Day following a knee injury.

That said, Vokes has only made on start since making his comeback for the Turf Moor outfit, and is unlikely to be included in the starting XI in Haifa on March 28.

Church sustained a shoulder injury early on in Wales 2-1 victory over Cyprus in October, but returned to action with Charlton Athletic in January.

Hull City defender James Chester (shoulder) represents Chris Coleman s most notable absentee, with Paul Dummett (knee), Geor…

Digne joins Roma on loan from PSG

Roma have completed the loan signing of left-back Lucas Digne from Paris Saint-Germain.

The France international moves to the Stadio Olimpico on a season-long deal for a fee of €2.5million with an option to make it permanent ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.

Digne s switch to the Italian capital sees him reunited with coach Rudi Garcia, who handed the defender his senior debut in 2011 when he was in charge of Ligue 1 side Lille.

I chose AS Roma because it s a legendary club with a big history, Digne told Roma TV.

I know that in this city and at this club there s everything you need to have success.

Arsenal eyeing Rugani move

Arsenal are considering a move for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani, according to Talksport.

The player’s agent Davide Torchia has confirmed the Gunners’ interest in his client but has said that no approach was made during the winter transfer window.

The North London side brought in Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January but are keen to strengthen their back line in the summer with Rugani expected to be moved for.

The twenty-three year old moved to Juve from Empoli in the summer of 2015 and has since racked up fifty-six appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals winning both the Serie A title and Coppa Italia in both of his full seasons with the club so far.

Internationally he has been capped just four times for his …
