Augsburg 0-1 Bayern Munich: A tale of two penalties wins it for out-of-sorts champions

Bayern Munich s luck was in as a story of two penalties was the main tale in their 1-0 win over Augsburg in Tuesday s Bundesliga contest.

Robert Lewandowski calmly slotted home from the spot after 13 minutes at Augsburg Arena and missed a glut of chances in a first half dominated by the champions.

It was a completely different outlook for Bayern after the break, though, and Hansi Flick s side were left breathing a sigh of relief when Alfred Finnbogason struck the post with a penalty of his own 15 minutes from time.

The end result means Bayern remain four points clear at the top but Flick will want to see fewer of the Jekyll-and-Hyde performances that have been on display in recent weeks from his side.

Portugal 0-1 France: Three Things We Learned

France booked their place at the 2021 UEFA Nations League finals on Saturday night after edging past reining champions Portugal in Lisbon.

Chelsea midfielder N Golo Kante gave the visitors the lead just after the break as he stabbed home from Rui Patricio s parry. The hosts pushed hard for an equaliser but weren t quite able to find one as they miss out on a chance to defend their title.

Here are three things we learned from the match:

Unlikely source opens the scoring

Deployed in a midfield three alongside Paul Pogba and Adrien Rabiot, one may not have expected Kante to push forward all that much throughout the game. Instead, he would play his usual role of winning the ball back from deep and driving forwards.

That was not how France boss Didier Descha…

Hungary punished with one-match ban following racist behaviour against England

Hungary have been ordered to play two home games, one suspended for two years, behind closed doors following the racial abuse of England players during their World Cup qualifier.

A 4-0 thrashing by Gareth Southgate s side in early September was overshadowed by reports of racial abuse directed at Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham by the home fans.

Objects were seen flying in Sterling s direction after his opener, with alleged monkey chants also coming from inside the Puskas Arena, as England coasted to victory.

FIFA s Disciplinary Committee has also issued the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) a fine of 200,000 Swiss francs (£158,000), with a qualifier against Albania on October 9 the game that will be played without spectators in Budapest.

Curtis Jones: Liverpool midfielder impresses Klopp and Henderson as Reds flatten Porto again

Curtis Jones may have not started the 2021-22 season quite as he hoped, but the Liverpool midfielder has been making up for lost time in his recent outings for the Reds.

After a breakout campaign that saw him go from talented prospect to first-team squad member, Jones desire to hit the ground running this term was held up by a concussion diagnosis, having suffered a blow to the head in a pre-season friendly.

Absent for the opening win over Norwich City, the midfielder saw Harvey Elliott emerge in the opening weeks to provide further competition for a place in the team, only to then suffer a serious leg injury in the away win at Leeds United.

With Naby Keita once more missing time and Thiago Alcantara sidelined, Jones has capitalised on his opportunities. A firs…

Cernak´s Perth move not certain

Isaka Cernak says his move to Perth Glory for next season is far from a done deal.

Cernak, who was signed by Wellington Phoenix for the rest of this A-League campaign during the transfer window, says he is negotiating with several clubs about next season – including the Phoenix.

It s not a done deal at the moment, said the 23-year-old attacking midfielder of a move to Western Australia.

I m not too sure how it ll go at the moment. It s just all up in the air.

I ve been in talks with a few clubs. I m just trying to make the best decision. At the moment I m enjoying the football here (at Wellington) and that s my focus.

They ve given me this chance to come here and I m very grateful for that and focusing on repaying that faith for the rest of…

Tuchel: Champions League semi-final defeat ´tough to accept´

Thomas Tuchel reflects on tough to accept defeat after Real Madrid came from behind to win 2-1 and knock Bayern Munich out of the Champions League on Wednesday.

After a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the semi-final at the Allianz Arena, Bayern took the lead in the 68th minute through Alphonso Davies.

However, Joselu came off the bench to score twice in three minutes to send the LaLiga champions to the Champions League final with a 4-3 aggregate win over Bayern.

It hurts. It’ll take a while to recover, but on the one hand, it’s a loss where we left it all out on the pitch,” Tuchel told DAZN after the game.

Of course, it’s tough to accept. It’s part of reality. No regrets. But on the other, there were too many injuries, a few too many substitution…

FA Cup magic still exists for lower league teams – Laird

As some of the big Premier League clubs bemoan another round of FA Cup football, Scunthorpe United defender Scott Laird said the magic is still alive for lower league teams ahead of his club s clash with Chelsea.

Laird has experienced his fair share of FA Cup magic, too.

In 2011, he was part of the Stevenage side that knocked Newcastle United and in 2012 he helped force a replay against Tottenham with the same team.

But his most memorable moment came in last season s edition when he put Preston North End 1-0 up against Manchester United in an eventual 3-1 loss.

This time, he hopes to go one better with Scunthorpe, who take on reigning Premier League champions Chelsea.

The only people who moan about the FA Cup are in the top leagues, Laird told T…

Matic linked with Chelsea exit

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge,.

The Serbia international is one of a number of Blues players who have failed to produce their best form this season, and he is set to consider his options going forward.

The twenty-seven-year-old was pulled off after just fifty-five minutes in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Everton after a below par display, while he missed just two league goals in the whole of the title-winning 2014/15 campaign.

Matic returned to Chelsea two years ago, having originally left the club for Benfica in the summer of 2011 after playing for them just three times in his first spell.

There are also question marks over the futures of Pedro, Eden Hazard, Diego Costa and Oscar as the champions remain j…

Lookman completes RB Leipzig switch

Ademola Lookman has joined RB Leipzig from Everton in a deal that could rise to be worth €25million (£22.5m).

England Under-21 international Lookman spent the second half of 2017-18 on loan at Leipzig and willl return permanently on a five-year contract.

The attacker looked set to make the switch prior to the 2018-19 campaign, but Everton rebuffed numerous offers from the Bundesliga side as Marco Silva insisted he saw him as a key member of his squad.

However, Lookman failed to establish himself during Silva s first season at Goodison Park, scoring one goal in 24 appearances across all competitions.

I am very happy to be back here and would like to continue where I left off in the second half of 2017-18 for RB Leipzig, the 21-year-old said.

Neuer must be given every chance to feature at World Cup – Lehmann

Germany must give Manuel Neuer every chance of featuring at the World Cup, former national-team goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has urged.

Neuer s 2017-18 campaign has been ruined by injury after the Bayern Munich keeper broke his foot in September.

The 32-year-old, who was a key part of Germany s triumphant squad in Brazil four years ago, has not played since then but did recently return to training.

Lehmann, who was capped 61 times for his country, is keen to see Neuer make the trip to Russia, but concedes he must prove his fitness by returning for Bayern s DFB-Pokal final with Eintracht Frankfurt next weekend.

You should wait as long as you can for him, the former Arsenal star told Bild.

If he can make the cup final against Frankfurt and the t…
